If you’re a new mom and you’ve decided to breastfeed your baby, a product that I definitely recommend having is a breast pump. There are so many different pumps on the market and the latest one that we’ve gotten to try out is the Zomee Z2 double electric breast pump. It’s a new pump that I’ve heard great things about. I was excited to check it out and see how it really works. We had a breastfeeding/pumping mama test it out as well (she has a two-month-old baby) and I’m sharing my thoughts as a mom and postpartum doula.

Portable and Lightweight

The first thing that I noticed when looking at the pump was how small and lightweight it is. It’s a great size for moms on the go. It’s super portable and can easily fit inside a purse or diaper bag with no problem.
USB-Rechargeable Battery

Some smaller pumps will sometimes require batteries. I really like how the Zomee Z2 has a USB-rechargeable internal battery. This gives moms the flexibility to recharge and pump wherever they need to, which is another convenient feature for moms on the go. Plug it into your computer, in the car, wherever you have a USB charging connection and pump!
Display Screen

I like that the display screen is a digital touch screen. It’s sleek and has a clean look. The interface is easy to use and consists of 6 buttons. The buttons are the power button (for you to turn it on and off), the + and – buttons (to adjust the pumping level), the “M” button (to switch to a different mode), the play and pause button (to pause and resume pumping rather than having to stop the session and restart), as well as the night light button (to turn on and off). The display shows the current mode, the suction level, the elapsed time, and the battery level.

Easy to Assemble and Easy to Use

I’ve assembled a lot of breast pumps over the years for myself as a pumping mama and for my postpartum doula clients. This pump was easy to assemble—very intuitive and uncomplicated. It has few parts and I can see that it will be simple to wash and sanitize, which is important to me. All of their plastic components are made without BPA or other harmful chemicals and comply with international safety regulations.

To turn it on, hold down the power button for 2 seconds. Then, press the “M” button to switch modes. You’ll want to select the best mode and level for you.
Closed System Hygienic Design

The Zomee Z2 has a fully enclosed system. This is great because this type of system allows your breastmilk to travel through the system, straight from your breast to the bottle, without coming into contact with the air. This anti-backflow design will maintain great hygiene for both you and your baby because it prevents your milk from backing up into the pump, preventing infection and keeping your milk fresh.
Night Light and Super Quiet System

When looking out the pump, I noticed that it has a built-in LED night light which is a great additional feature and makes operating the Zomee Z2 easy even in the dark.
When I quickly turned it on to listen to the motor, I found the Z2 to be extremely quiet. Some pumps can be loud and obnoxious. This one is nice and quiet. You can jump on a call and pump without the other person knowing or do a night pumping session without waking your sleeping baby.
I personally am no longer pumping for my kids, so I was looking forward to seeing my doula client and having her test it out to see how well it worked.
Testing Out the Zomee Z2 Breast Pump

My client’s baby boy is still working on his suction strength while breastfeeding. He’s been having difficulty draining his mama’s breasts while breastfeeding. Because of this, a breast pump has been vital for her. After each nursing session, she normally does a single pumping session on the breast he fed on to get the rest of her hindmilk and then bottle-feeds it to her baby afterward.
Once we sanitized and set up the Zomee Z2 pump, we got to check it out in action.
Single Pumping Session

I like how the Zomee Z2 pump offers single pumping as an option. After my client nursed her son on one breast, she tried single pumping first on that same breast.
I thought it interesting that the motor starts on the second phase mode so that it mimics the way your baby feeds from mom. It begins with a quicker/ weaker suction followed by a slower/ stronger suction to help trigger a milk letdown, which mimics a baby’s feeding pattern without having to switch settings. If the level isn’t strong enough, switch to the expression mode and a higher level for a stronger suction.

I immediately noticed that this pump gave my client a quick letdown. Because it has a 2 phase mode, the technology helps moms with stimulation, massage, and expression, which helps have an efficient pumping session.

My client said that it was comfortable, pain-free, and efficient. In a short 8-minute single pumping session, she was able to pump 2 ounces, and that was after her son had nursed for 12 minutes. This was great!
Different Modes and Levels

It’s important for mothers to test different modes and levels to figure out the best pumping settings for themselves. We saw that the Zomee Z2 features three modes: massage, expression, and 2-phase mode. It also has 19 different suction levels, which is amazing. There is even a preemie setting to mimic how baby feeds from mom.
Double Pumping Session

I normally recommend mothers to double pump if they need to pump. Not only is double pumping faster, but it’s more efficient at generating milk output. Compared to single pumping, double pumping results in 18 percent more milk volume being pumped over a 15-minute pumping duration. In addition, because double pumping is more efficient, it leads to better-drained breasts. Good breast drainage is important for maintaining and increasing milk supply — the more milk you pump, the more milk you will produce.
Alternate Mode Technology

What I find really cool about this pump is that it has alternate mode technology: rhythmically alternates expression between the breasts. The Z2 is the only pump on the market with alternate mode technology. I got to see that this pumping mode rhythmically alternates expression between breasts when double pumping, which allows each breast to react to each other and help increase stimulation and express more milk in less time. I love that they added this alternating stimulation technology to help moms bring in their milk supply at a quicker pace and have a better pumping output.

Two Other Bonuses
From what I saw after testing the Zomee Z2 double electric breast pump, I am extremely pleased with it. Not only is it a portable, quiet, efficient pump with new technology, it also has a great price! It retails for $189.99, which is an amazing price for a hospital strength pump. It is also covered by insurance. Another bonus is that it has a two-year warranty. Here is how it stacks up compared to other breast pumps.

Overall, I like this pump, I recommend it, and I think it’s a wonderful option for lactating people.
